Re: In-world sequels and myth building

Thanks for the responses. ...come to think of it, I'm not sure if there are very many game series I've even played that could fall into this category... That's one reason why I asked. It seemed like something video games can do very well design-wise, though there might be market limitations against ...

Re: Lunar Game Comparisons?

I'll name 4. (Grandia isn't even included, though it might well be.) 1. Skies of Arcadia. Both Vyse and Alex want to experience something well beyond their village, and they go on a wide-sweeping adventure collecting magical artifacts and seeing the world. The Gigas resemble the dragons, and tonally...

My saves seem to be clustered around 24 hours. That matches with my memory.

Re: New Here!

Welcome Shugo! I've been a massive Lunar fan since 1999 when my friend showed me SSSC on Playstation. Shortly after he showed me; Lunar 2 came out and I've been hooked ever since then. I own both Playstation Complete editions and the PSP remake. That's roughly my trajectory too, except it was a maga...

Re: Fastest Game Time

I think talking to every NPC multiple times makes my fastest game time rather slow. :)

I'd have to dig out memory cards to see. If you mean SSSC, I'm sure I'm not under 16 hours.

Re: Final Fantasy XV

I stopped playing right when the game was transitioning from open-world to the later-chapters-on-a-train. I'll go back to it, I'm sure; I just found I'd completed most of the open-world stuff and had less appetite for the main story.

In-world sequels and myth building

A stray thought today led me to think about game series that rely on a recurring pattern of threat, and how the games and their sequels explain that threat. In other words, how do characters in a serial RPG world understand all the bad things that keep happening? How would the players understand it?...

Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

A month later, and I'm still playing all three games. The Witcher III is thoroughly enjoyable, but my do-all-sidequests behavior and a two-week honeymoon have meant I've only done the first few required quests while delving deep into optional content. I haven't even visited Triss yet! I also find th...

Re: High quality S-Video switch box??

I'll piggyback a question on yours: doesn't any intermediary between a box and a display entail some loss in quality? In other words, the mere fact that the signal has to be adapted means that there's one more connection that could mess with the display quality. I used a basic switch-box that used b...

Re: Activism, Social Justice, Protests and you: The Political Discussion Containment Thread

Yeah, when I read that I'm being called whiny and self-righteous in the first line, that doesn't really inspire me to engage. Quite the opposite; I assume the person writing those words doesn't have any ideas that are worth my time, and that they're venting for some reason I can't fathom. I'll refer...

It's interesting to see how Ramadan traverses the calendar based on posting time. I'm traveling in the UK right now, and today I saw a gathering today marking this occasion. Eid Mubarak!

^ And also unlike PCs, the homebrew emulating crowd doesn't seem nearly as prominent or viable. :/ Nor (yet) do official emulators seem like a possibility.

Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

I finished Persona 5 without significant (months-long) pauses or breaks, which is remarkable for a game of its length. (For comparison, it took me about 3-4 years to finish Xenoblade Chronicles, will likely take that long to finish its sequel, and I like both games.) I would defend the story and its...

I know Kizyr has. I have the Saturn version, but I've never tried to play it. I think when I got it I was busy working on my dissertation, and I didn't think of it afterward. :)

Persona 5

Started to post this in the gaming thread, then wrote too much. Anyone else playing this? If so, feel free to jump in - I only ask people mark spoilers for content after the first palace. I'm only about halfway through it, in mid-September game time, but I've been obsessed enough that I'll read any ...

Re: Axe Appreciation Thread.

One of my favorite Genesis games was Golden Axe II, which for a while confused me because two out of the three playable characters use swords. (I was young.) Thinking about it now, "Golden Sword" doesn't sound nearly as cool. The market of famous mythological swords is already too full. Sp...

Re: LN Book Club! Currently about: 1984, (we can add more)

In fact, though, this myth we like to believe that there's no class makes it harder, because I find people have a hard time recognizing or admitting when they're engaging in dialect supremacy, instead preferring to believe that it's all about "just being understood" or something more inno...
