On the topic of what classes become pirates, consider The Pirates of Penzance. I've never heard it, but I've read a synopsis, and as I recall, it ends with all of the pirates being forgiven their crimes because they're all actually nobility, and "peers will be peers". I'm pretty sure there's a nonnegligible proportion of other highborn turning criminal. It's not like being the de facto leader of Meribia held Lunn back.
