Heh, good old times

Postby Erasculio » Sat Jul 30, 2005 3:18 am

I was around at that time, too. I even remember Hatless Dezorian's post on the Shrine to Ghaleon (heh, what happened with him anyway?).

If I'm not mistaken, some fans were angry about how the Dark Scimitar wasn't a good weapon, and about how Working Designs had teased about it - some people though this was akin to lying, and complained a lot on that matter.

That's all I remember. It did happen a long time ago, though, I'm amazed I remember the Lemina Bug at all :P .

Hatless Dezorian is very much around, but he goes by JWL now. He's still a regular visitor at the Shrine to Ghaleon's message board.

Well, I didn't really get to play Lunar 2 until the PSX remake. But I read about the DS in a FAQ. A hacker at GSHI made a code to access it in the PSX version, but it's probably different than the Sega CD version. I can't believe they left it in the game.

http://www.thegshi.org is the link to GSHI.

I can't believe how something as stupid as that ended up with flames and hatred.

Phyco, don't reopen that. There's nothing more to say, is there? That's not even what he was posting about.

iamstillhiro, there's no need to post the same stuff in multiple boards; people here generally read all the Lunar boards. It's especially not necessary to bump a four-month-old topic for this when your post has little to do with EB.

In addition, that code is for the Bromide X, not the Dark Scimitar itself. At least according to the description.

Well, he said he couldn't believe they left it in the game, and I was saying I couldn't believe how worked up people got over that. That's all.

Well, far as I could tell the forum was deadish, so I thought it would be a good idea to post this in more than one place, to ensure it does not go unoticed. Anyway, it would be a good idea to try the code before saying there is soemthing wrong with it.

Wow, thanks for that little snippet of Lunar history, man. That was a really cool read.

Somebody called Kizyr posts in response to me at some point that some guy emailed him, or something, blah, I don't remember, but I got hooked up with someone calling himself Hatless Dezorian.

I posted on Rune's message boards about how to get the Dark Scimitar. It was a long-winded and totally BS method, but it got a few people talking with one another--that was an unintentional side-effect.

...so what name do you go by these days? Still Evil_C? KF

I assume this is Evil C? If so nice to see you again! I didn't think you were ever banned? I know Keith and Hatless and a few others were, but I never remembered you really doing anything wrong. Either way, it's all ancient history anyways. I know Hatless doesn't seem to really care at this point, though he is still around.

Outside of all that, how you been?

Just because I'm persnickety that way, Keith wasn't banned until the following year, for a totally different issue. I wasn't around for the DS thing, but I was for that.

Thanks for the narrative. I joined the WDMB a few months after all that and heard these vague references to past drama, but didn't find the Grotto until around February 2000 and knew none of the participants then. It's interesting to read this summary.

Don't know if you intend to stick around, but if you do, what sort of musician are you?

Yeah, that'd definitely be too much credit. The reason the DS chapter is so scandalous isn't because it hurt WD as a business. Lunar:EBC sold just fine the very next year. The problem is that Vic handled PR regarding the DS extremely poorly rather than simply telling the truth about what happened.

Plus, while it seems so very scandalous and widespread to the Lunar community, the fact is that the DS scandal happened in 1999 on some internet message boards. The mainstream/casual part of the video game market had no idea and much of the hardcore crowd was getting all their coverage from print mags. So the DS was a relatively small event. Were it to happen nowadays, it would be a lot bigger. For instance, imagine at GameFAQs' current size the reaction they would have with Vic covering up an item possibly accessible in a game.

All You People who are checking this out and not responding: why don't you give a little response? I'm bizarrely inquisitive as to what on earth people make of all this; evidently the "memory" didn't go away, judging by the astronomical number of hits. I'm taken aback.

Views are logged by the number of hits only, not unique hits. So if I check back several times in the day, that's several hits on the views counter.

Anyway, I'll get to the rest of that post later when I have the time. KF

Having also lived through DS incident and all its fallout, I will just say that was one of the stickiest situations ever to hit the community.

I remember for at least 2-3 years after that happened, I used to immedietly break out the fire extinguisher, wooden planks, nails, and a hammer to corden off any DS topic that came up at the Shrine's MB, just because mere mention of it usually sparked a nice little conflagration.

All I remember is always thinking "Oh man....DS thread! Must stop it before Hatless/JWL sees it and lays into the newb!" heh heh.

Now, of course, getting close to 8-10 years later, it's a safe topic to bring up and reminice about, but back in the day it was indeed a hot topic capable of starting a forest fire.

Like Sheriff Roas said. The Dark Scimitar stuff is of no consequence. I really don't care about it at all anymore, and I'm kind of shocked that it's still such a touchy subject for so many people.

'Evil_C' was perhaps a bit too young to remember everything, so maybe it's a bit more fresh in my memory.

Most of the background on the glitch and getting the DS from the game data has already been explained by Evil_C. However, the sparks really started to fly after we got the item. I posted a long, clumsy explanation of the Lemina Bug on the WDMB, and got underwhelming responses. One reply told me to get the point and not be so long winded. Vic was, naturallly, completely silent on the issue.

This was followed by numerous posts made by yours truly trying to get Vic to speak up on the Lemina Bug, and this Dark Scimitar item which we got out of the game. As convoluted as the glitch is to use, 'Evil_C' and I genuinely thought that it might have been the only, and even the intended way to get the DS out of the game. So that's what we wanted to know. I believe my question to WD/Vic went something like this: "Is the Lemina Bug the only way, and therefore the correct way, to get the DS?"

Silence! I saw WD staff replying to all other kinds of posts, but the DS issue simply wouldn't be addressed. After awhile, it seemed as if WD was archiving the board more often than usual to get rid of DS posts. Could have been me imagining things, but, who really cares now? That's just what it seemed like at the time, so I can paint an accurate picture of the events that followed.

In the end, annoyed by the lack of response, I posted some inflammatory message (Me post flames? Never!) , and then I got quite a lot of replies. But still, no reply from WD staff. I did, however, really tick off a lot of the people on the WDMB. Vic wasn't pleased, to put it mildly. Myself and all those associated with me were banned. I think it was about four people in total. If memory serves, it was me, Evil_C, Synbios/Parn/Jason, and Dr Carter.

The conclusion which I came to - and nothing I have seen contradicts this - is that the Dark Scimitar, Grim Saber, Goddess Fan, etc are all weapons which are in the item data of Japanese Lunar EB but were never placed in treasure chests anywhere in the game. As someone who has played the game many times, I can tell you that there are several places in the dungeons which really look like a treasure chest belongs there, but there's nothing there. Also, inaccessible items in RPGs are not anything out of the ordinary; similar items are found in the data of the old Phantasy Star games.

So... the "zanji-maru" sword was in the item data, and WD translated that item data, renaming the sword "Dark Scimitar" and including it in the instruction manual. The only problem was that you couldn't get the item in the game since there's no treasure chest for it. Not really a big deal if you ask me, but apparently something Vic wasn't anxious to talk about. Heaven only knows why not.

I did find a photograph that I took of the DS, for those interested:

<img src="http://static.flickr.com/18/70346142_fa0110e04f.jpg?v=0">

It's really not a very useful weapon. The "Kill Attack" automatically drains 26 MP from Hiro for critical damage when he does an ordinary attack, but that's usually going to be weaker than the 4 MP-using Poe Sword attack.

To those nervous about this topic, please don't walk on eggshells on my account. There's really no need.
