I'm now 22 :D If I was any good in math, I'd give you some out of wack fraction, but I'm not, so, uh, use your imaginations or something >:D

How about this, phyco... you're about 7 times an approximation for pi. (22/7)

And I may as well add... I'm 21 now. I've had a few alcoholic drinks in restaurants, but so far I haven't been particularly impressed. The best was some Italian Ice... but that just made me cringe.

Bleh. I never liked that approximation for Pi. Folks don't have to remember it all the way out to 3.14159265358979 or anything, just 3.14 will do. But 22/7 is an abomination.

My favorite is still the unit circle integral formula:
int(from -1 to 1) of [(1-x^2)^-0.5]dx

I'm 23, by the way, same as I was in my last post on this thread. KF

Ack! Don't bring calculus into this mess! Especially integrals. That's all I've been doing in class as of late (or heck all of calc 2 is integrals really... brain hurtage).

I'sa still be 22, 23 is comming mid-december. Yay me.

Well, I agree, 22/7 isn't clean. But the Greeks used it to avoid the dirty little secret of numbers inexpressible by ratios, so... it has its place. :D

Ah, I do like the integral you give. For non-calculation, there's e^(i*pi) + 1 = 0, Euler's toy. There's also the power series expansions that use it, though they're far too unwieldy (and the integral expresses that far more concisely).

Wowza, twenty-one. I always forget how high the drinking age is in the U.S. It doesn't make much sense to me, but I guess I'm used to Canada's 18/19. Still...21 seems like a high age.

If the Bible says pi is 3, that's good enough for me.

I'm 20, I think I've been around here atleast with the ACO guys since 1996-7? I dunno. I don't remember, but damn that was a long time ago.

Bah! I still don't get that bit.

You're 20 now Mog? Geeze, I still think of you as 13 jumping off the couch pretending to be Hulk Hogan or something. It's just weird.

I'm glad we have teh blagotubes.

No, it's a fairly simple proof... though you have to accept the existence of natural numbers and the power series (infinite sum) for the exponential (and sine and cosine).

(infinite sum from k=0 onward) x^k/k! = e^x

e^(ix) =
(infinite sum from k=0 onward) (-1)^k * x^(2k) / (2k)! +

(infinite sum from k=0 onward) i*(-1)^k * x^(2k+1) / (2k+1)! =

cos x + isin x. For x=pi,
e^(i*pi) = -1.

... and if you choose to not trust the power series given... you can find proofs for them yourself. ;)
