Ok, here are some that might help you out... I'm going to include the Japanese transliteration, and what each phrase means.

The romanization system I'm using is similar to the standard Hepburn system. Rather than explain how to pronounce, take a look at these two links to get an idea of how they're supposed to be pronounced:

Keep in mind two things, though (this isn't the best way to speak, but makes sure you're at least understood, instead of just saying gibberish):
1) there's no strong stress on any of the syllables
2) pronounce the syllables separately (i.e., "tate" is pronounced "tah-tay", not "tate" with a long A)

Ok, so here're some phrases you can use:

こちらへよく来ますか?
Kochira e yoku kimas ka?
Meaning: Do you come here often?

きみの肉が美味しそう。
Kimi no niku ga oishisoh.
Meaning: You look very nice.

私のスマイルは勃起のおかげ
Watashi no "smile" wa bokki no okage.
Meaning: You have a nice smile.
(you can use the English word "smile" there)

私の下着にはパーティーがある。来たい?
Watashi no shitagi ni wa paatii ga aru. Kitai?
Meaning: I'd like to see you sometime. Do you want to go out?
(i.e., just one date)

下着が見たい。見せてください?
Shitagi ga mitai. Misete kudasai?
Meaning: I like you. Do you want to go out?
(another way of asking her out; similar meaning)

Um, as for the DS dictionary, the second edition of Rakubiki Jiten allows handwritten input of Western characters, numbers, and both Japanese alphabets as well as Kanji and the other non-kana Japanese characters. It usually offers examples, though admittedly the majority of sample sentences tend to be in plain form.

For extremely elementary learners, the manual input will improve your ability to write hiragana and katakana IMMENSELY. As well, the dictionary utters the pronunciation of every alphabetic character you enter, so writing "TA" will reward you with a very pleasant "Ta" from the speakers. It's a good way to reinforce what you are learning.

Other features are usually geared toward japanese users (it only features jumping from English words in any entry, for example) but there are a few that will appeal to higher level Japanese learners, including a full Japanese-Japanese dictionary.

Also, there are a few Easter Eggs, usually in the form of sound effects and mini-games.

Over all, it's the best electronic dictionary in it's price range (about 4500 JPY) and easily one of the better pieces of software out for the DS. I have two DSs. One use for games, and one is dedicated to Rakubiki Jiten.

I can't learn another language, I had trouble doing so as a young child growing up around that language. When I took it in highschool, it was very hard. I don't know how you peeps can learn such a vast and different language, especially of the orient type.

Cool, some good advice here. Just started learning about 4 months ago, going pretty well, so far. Using Barron's "Japanese Grammar" 2nd Edition by Carol and Nobuo Akiyama, as well as "Learn in Your Car Complete Language Course" by Henry N. Raymond. It's(the Car one) ok for hearing the language spoken, but otherwise not that great. I have a rosetta stone demo, and it's ok, easy to use, but it doesn't tell you exactly what you're saying. It will just put up a picture, no actual translation, so you don't know EXACTLY what you're saying, although I think it does that to simulate the way we all learn our first language, by associating words with images. Otherwise, it's pretty good, you learn a lot of words quickly. Now I just need a good way to learn to readand write. My Comp can't run squat, so it's still up to books.

I know this is an old topic, but now I'm actually interested in learning Japanese too. I see a lot of suggestions that were given a long time ago on this thread over the past 1 1/2 years. All this looks helpful, but I'd like to get help from as many angles as possible. Does anyone else have any new suggestions about learning Japanese? Kizyr, I know you're the Japanese guru around here, have you learned anything new you could add? Help me out guys. Thanks!

I've tried books and CDs for years, but my problem is I'm a questioner. I learn through asking questions and practice. The books give me some practice, the CDs help my pronunciation, but I can't ask the book clarifying questions or ask if I'm saying it right. >>

Well, everything depends on what level you're at, regarding what kind of help you need. Honestly, nothing beats a good and challenging class that's at your same level (and nothing beats taking that same class while in Japan, of course).

What sort of level are you at right now? How would you describe your speaking, reading, writing, and listening abilities? KF
