Something Awful

Post by Benevolent_Ghaleon »

Many say this place is truly hilarious, others say it is diminishing.

How do you guys feel about this site? Lately, a guy has been interviewing porn stars (generally women) and getting them angry. It's pretty hilarious.

Zack: Hello and thank you for taking the time to talk with me!

DAINC: You're very welcome.

Zack: The 2000 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records certified you as "Most downloaded woman on the Internet", do you think it's really possible to download a woman?

DAINC: I'm not sure I follow.

Zack: Looking back from the post-9/11 world, do you really feel it is literally possible to download a woman?

DAINC: I'm pretty sure they meant images of me, not actually me.

Zack: No, they didn't mean that at all.

DAINC: Okay...

DAINC: Anything else?

Zack: Have you ever played Mechwarrior 3?

DAINC has disconnected****

Personally, i found that to be quite amusing. They also do Photoshop Phriday's which is also great.

Here's a good photoshop.

specify. You don't get the photoshop image, you don't understand the humor in the interview or you visited the site and left unsure of what it's about?

Well, the picture, the interview, and the entire sense of humor, I guess.

I image is of Sonic the Hedgehog (you probably know that, though) and throughout all the Sonic games he collects rings in the courses, so they have a poster of the Lord of the Rings with Sonic (who identifies with rings) makes sense (and is supposed to be funny).

I liked the image, but the interview thing was kinda dumb. I've only been to the site a few times and it didn't amaze me.

Eh, bland on both counts. The interview wasn't very much; asking someone something esoteric so they'll disconnect doesn't do very much for a comedic setup.

The LotR poster is ok... lots of effort for one pun.

The stuff that comes up for voting at http://www.thefunniest.info/ is much better... KF

Have any of you really given the site a true shot and looked through several of its sections? Ever browsed the forums? That forum has originated several things that have grown quite popular on the net. Pain Series anyone?

Sadly, the majority of the people to say this to me haven't had the self-discipline to stick to it. http://www.cfc-efc.ca/docs/ycca/00000349.htm

Popularity on the Internet doesn't always mean that something is good. But I've heard from a friend that Something Awful can be good from time to time.

But to be perfectly honest, I don't really have the time to surf the Internet. I go to achewood once a day, and I go to penny-arcade MWF.

BTW, Kizyr, if you haven't been to penny-arcade yet to day, you really should. I have a feelling you like this one.

For proof of that we only need to look as far as Slashdot, ebaumsworld, 4Chan, LUElinks, ytmnd.

Any time immaturity has an opportunity to coalesce en masse like that, where any jerk with a keyboard has an opinion and a soapbox it tends to yield an occasionally funny piece of satire or irony. Or perhaps something with some educational value, but it more often than not will produce nothing more than another in the line of endless fads that only end up looking for a place to die.

"Good" is another opinionated matter. The same thing applies to maturity. The more i talk to people the more convinced i become that maturity and morality are just a couple of things people use to condescend to one another and to justify their points of view so they feel more secure in them.

Thanks for the link, that place just killed five minutes of my time. Murderer.

As for Something Awful, the only thing I'd seen from there was an article about cleaning up Silent Hill. That was drop dead hilarious, but browsing the site from your link I couldn't find much that I actually found funny.

Fear of objectivist principles is a display of ones own fear of certainty because of the guilt they would carry otherwise in their actions.

And from what I have seen and read about places like SA, it has bred nothing more than disgusting fads (such as the pain series you mentioned), internet vigilantism, harassment, and other anti-social behavior that people cling onto behind the guise of internet anonimity.

Strangely enough, people use pseudo-iconoclasm and contempt for 'maturity and morality' for exactly that purpose.

As for SA, once in a while I'm directed to an amusing thread and occasionally my husband and I get a giggle from the Photoshop Friday submissions. But I've never had any interest in browsing there in general. Why spend my time panning for gold in a sewer?

I've also noticed that people who show contempt for SA generally do so with an elitist attitude.

I certainly don't dislike maturity or morality, but i do dislike the abuse of the terms in an attempt to condescend. That was the point i was making.

I also understand objectivity, subjectivity and the like. I have fears for very few things in which i feel i don't have enough certainty, but those subjects don't fall into the list. I wanted to see what response i'd get when i brought up my point of view on the subject of opinionated matters.

Something awful has some funny stuff. My favorite is still how they made fun of My Humps by the Black Eyed Peas xD
