James Bond vs. Jason Bourne vs. Ethan Hunt

Post by hob »

With all of the political thrillers and spy movies coming out, and the third "Borne" movie due out in 2007, I thought it would be a fitting to pose the question, "Who is the toughest spy?"

The fight is between James Bond, agent 007, Jason Borne of "The Bourne Identity" series, and Ethan Hunt of Mission Impossible fame.

Here's how I see the fight...

James Bond and Ethan Hunt are agents from different governments that both want Jason Bourne caught/dead. After 2 hours and 20 minutes of movie-filler to get us to this point, we finally see the showdown we paid to see. It doesn't matter how they ended up all fighting each other, what matters is that they are all in the same room duking it out.

James Bond (Daniel Craig version) showed he can be an formidable opponent in Casino Royale, uncommonly without multitudes of gadgets. Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) has proved in the past he can beat one guy at a time in hand to hand combat after he's been knocked around a while. And as we all know, Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) has received tremendous Kali training and can down a room of guys with only his hands in less than 5 seconds.

Ethan Hunt is used to defeating his enemies with his fists, so long as it's one-on-one. But since his opponents aren't your typical terroists, and he's fighting against TWO, he'll be toast without a gun. He's the first to fall.

That leaves James and Jason. They're almost the opposite of the food chain. Bond lives a life of luxury, gets all the nicest clothes, nicest cars and gadgets, stays in the fanciest hotels, lots of women and the support of an entire agency backing him. Bourne, on the other hand, is constantly on the run, living by the sweat on his back. His clothes are average at best, resides in poverty-level villages, tries not to get women involved but is extremely loyal if he does, and is completely by himself.

So tackling a top agent like Bond isn't anything new to Bourne. But the Daniel Craig version of Bond isn't a pushover, either, obviously having tedious physical training. After they tagteam Ethan they go head to head. James puts up a great fight but is too much for theatrics, whereas Jason Bourne is all about quick finishes (unless he's in a car chase).

Bond is able to land some good hits but after 2 minutes of intense combat, emtionally and physically, the only one walking away from this threeway brawl is Jason Bourne.

Agree? Disagree?

A bit of a difference...

Now, Ethan Hunt is the first to go down, for the same reasons you gave. He's no pushover, but faced against Bond and Bourne? No contest there.

But, between Bond and Bourne, I have to vote for Bond. Bourne's big forte is giving others the slip; he can get out of any situation. But, I see him as one to find a way to hightail it out of there in a showdown against Bond--not out of fear, but because he'll figure it's his best chance to survive. Bond, while his job entails avoiding detection, isn't as good at giving others the slip.

But this is about fighting. So, I see the battle going differently when it's Bourne vs. Bond. Bourne, at some point, will escape from Bond, and Bond either will 1) chase him and give up, or 2) leave and try another angle at catching him. Bourne's forfeit leaves victory to Bond, even though Bourne's still alive. KF

Darn right. Glad we agree that Ethan's out. Don't get me wrong, I liked Mission Impossible, but... ok no I didn't. But the second one was... worse. Ok, ok, fine, the first two were extremely cliché. The third was really good, but I wouldn't watch it again. And I digress...

This is a very true tactic that I overlooked. Bourne is a very slippery fish. But don't forget in The Bourne Supremacy, he brought his "war to (their) doorstep". He slips away, but he can slip behind enemy lines just as easily. It's how he fights.

And like I said before, Bond is all about threatrics. Because Bourne NEEDS to give the slip, he won't waste any time in killing Bond, but he'll more likely knock him out.

It's very true that Bourne may run, but he basically runs because he just wants to be left alone. Once he knows that Bond is after him, he'll bring the fight to the queen's castle if he has to.

Man, why isn't anyone else chimbing in? This blog is flippin' FUN!

Bourne wins. Hunt is ther first to die because he just can't compete with Bond and Bourne. The reason Bourne wins is that he won't make that mistake that Bond always takes advantage of to win his fights, he'll finish it real quick, won't talk and will be all about business.
