Tales of Phantasia

Post by DragonmasterDan »

The first game in the "Tales of" series was finally released in the US. Tales of Phantasia is out for Game Boy Advance. I played a translated rom of the Super Famicom version quite a few years ago so it's neat to finally see an actual domestic release of the game.

I think what he means is the first in the series. Tales of Symphonia is not the first in the least bit. The Tales of Series has a few to it's name... and one of them bein' Tales of Destiny... WHICH HAS A BARD!

Good times.

What Asmo pointed out. Tales of Symphonia isn't the first game in the series. Tales of Phantasia is, but this is the first time it's been released domestically.

If you're at all curious, Tales of Phantasia is my favorite game after the Lunar series. And, the best Super Famicom game ever released (that's including Chrono Trigger, by the way). The GBA version is closer to the PSX remake, which has some really nice added goodies (minus the cinemas in the PSX one, of course). KF

What's the word on the translation of Tales of Phantasia? I heard some bad about it, but I don't really trust the source. So anyone here (I trust 90% of the people here) have an opinion?

The translation is decent though uninspired. It's not terrible, it's quite playable. However the voice acting/ samples are/ is quite frankly Shining Force III level atrocious though.

I'm very interested in this game and "Tales of Legendia" for the PS2 (any relation? I'm not certain) Looks good and Symphonia was a great game for the Gamecube, one of the few I might add that made getting it worth it.

I would hope not too similar...from what I've heard, the fan translation suffered from a major overdose of hormones.

Yep, it's the same series. The US released Tales of games are as followed

1. Tales of Phantasia
2. Tales of Destiny
3. Tales of Eternia (released in the US as Tales of Destiny II)
4. Tales of Symphonia
5. Tales of Legendia

There are more games in the series released solely in Japan, It's also worth noting that there is a seperate different Tales of Destiny II in Japan that is a direct sequel to Tales of Destiny. And it's also worth noting that in Japan and Europe Tales of Eternia was released for PSP.

Tales games are awesome! It's really refreshing to see an RPG series with such an engaging battle system. It's pretty unique. This release kind of makes me sad though, because it reminds me how long it's been since I played Tales of Destiny 2.

Is Tales of Eternia a good game? (Hopefully that's the one you're talking about) I own it, but I've never had time to play it...(Although I've started with someone, we don't have a lot of time)

Bwahahah ^o^

I have Tales of Phantasia for the Playstation partially translated thanks to Phantasia Productions back in the old days still. The animated sequences for the PS are awesome. Now I just can't wait to get the non-french subbed Tales of Phantasia anime on DVD this time around.

It's pretty decent, it's better than Tales of Destiny. On a side note calling Tales of Eternia, Tales of Destiny 2 can be confusing since there is a different Japanese Tales of Destiny 2.

This game rocks. There do seem to be a few balance issues between Claus and Arche, though.

PS: I haven't beaten it yet.

I haven't had a chance to pick up Tales of Phantasia for the GBA. Would it be worth my while? I'm an avid RPG game player/collecter, just ask G1. Would have been nice if I wouldn't have had to get rid of my stuff back when I was broke... oh well.

I truly enjoied the Tales of Series, though I have to admit Phantasia is one I never got my hands on (lame I know..) so I'll be rather interested in getting my hands on this one... Though I would really like animated cut scenes, that was the one thing about Tales of Symphonia that dissapointed me. It should have been like SSSC and EBC with pretty anime cut scenes... yus.

The PS2 rerelease of Tales of Symphonia had a couple more anime cutscenes (among other add-ons), but that version was never released here.

As for Tales of Phantasia, it's my personal favorite Tales game. I'm a bit disappointed in the bland translation in the official release (plus "Kangaroo" irks me), but at least they didn't go overboard like deJap did.

I'm glad they finally got around to releasing it here either way, even if the GBA remake pales in comparison to the PS1 remake. But what were the chances of an 8-year-old game for an obsolete system getting released, anyway?
