Game Saves website...anyone interested?

Post by LordScimitar »

Hello all, as this is my first post, but there's a good chance you'll be seeing a lot more of me soon.

But, to the point of this post.

I have been thinking for a long time now to make a "game saves" website. For PC games, unless there's some profile stuff involved, it should be really pretty easy to do. Game saves may be saves before important cutscenes, or between "split paths" in games, such as multiple Suikoden Endings or Star Ocean character choices, or perhaps "Power Up" games for those who like to see just how powerful they can get.

Now, for console games, it would get tricky. Now, I don't want to be modded, though nothing in any of the rules talked about rather emulator/mod questions/games/whatever can be posted. So, I won't post links or anything, so don't worry about that.

But, for console games, I guess I would have to rely on ROM saves. I don't know if ROM saves depend on having the exact same emulator or exact same ROM file, or what. I would have to check that. Furthermore, I would not provide the ROM, so that may limit the site's usefulness.

But, would anyone be interested in this at all? If I did it, here is some Lunar game saves I would try to have:

Lunar: SS
Before any cutscene
Final Game Save before the bosses
Ending Save (or savestate)
Level 99
Level 99+++ (This would be playing for an extra 6-7 hours loading up on dover nuts from the grindery to boost defense on alex or kyle so they are super tough, and the same for the magical defense nuts located outside meribia/althena's temple at end game)
Lunar: EB
Before Cutscenes
At every Lemina Bug Location
With/without certain chars Epilogue
Final Boss/Final Epilogue Boss
Level 99-pre and post Epilogue

Lunar: SSS
Memorizer with all scenes/all Bromides/Etc
Before Last Battle
Level 99
End Game Save

Lunar: EB
All bromides/etc/bromide X
Before last battle/before last epilogue battle
Level 99-pre and post Epilogue

Other games:
FF7-Before cutscenes, All Materia/Level 99/Level 99+++ (Materia mastery, stat boosting items abused, etc etc)
Suikoden-Before char choices, All possible end games, etc
SO2-Before char choices, all endings, etc etc

Also, the site would accept saves from other people. It'd have to, I couldn't do it all on my own! Obviously, it would be MOSTLY RPGs, or Strategy games, though there's room for other game saves of course. This site could be used for anything up to the PS1 era basically. Maybe in another 5-6 years, include PS2/Xbox era, I don't know.

So, if I did indeed build this site, would anyone here be interested? Or do you think anyone at all would actually be interested? Or, would I just be wasting my time building something no one will care about?

Thanks for reading, and I welcome any suggestions.

DexDrives exist, you know. No need to put up emu-only PlayStation saves rather than the actual console ones.

I think it would be a useful site, but as a suggestion, I would also include any utilities to convert save files between emulator saves, DexDrive saves, etc. and perhaps even house multiple file-formats. It's certainly a good idea. I know when I was trying to screengrab Lunar shots for LunarNET I needed saves at specific places, and with EBC specifically, it was extremely hard to find what I was looking for. Given a good design and quality content, you could have a winner with this one. Just so long as you keep aware of what's legal and what's not.

Remeber, if your saves are saved from EMU's then you're going to need to convert them to the proper formate inorder for DexDrive to be compadible with the files.

If I recall there should be a multi-save conversion utility still at Zophar.net, not entirely positve though.

I'm pretty sure there is. It may have been done by Aldo's Tools (just do a search for it, his website has tons of conversion type tools for game saves and the like).

Yeah, I would definitely have to do some research on the best emulators and how to possible make the saves as "universal" as possible. For each system, too.

Well, glad the idea is getting SOME positive feedback. Gamefaqs has a nice section on it, but too many cheated saves on there. Mine would be all without cheats (well, maybe SOME cheats would be allowed, for example the FF7 item duplication trick so you don't have to spend 800 hours buying the greens. That, and I can't detect that cheat).

Well, I'll have to give some serious thought on it now. Thanks for the replies.
