Just got a DS

Post by Ericsc »

Well I finally did it. I got a DS lite. I've wanted one for awhile now. This is my first video game system since I got the Dreamcast shortly after launch in 1999.

So far I've only got Zelda Phantom Hourglass. What are the must have games for both the DS and GBA? I seem to be equally excited about both the DS an GBA games. Keep in mind I originally had a Genesis so most of the SNES ports will be brand new to me.

Also my internet network is not wireless. Do you think it's worth it to get that wireless USB adapter Nintendo sells?

GBA:
--If you've never played Zelda: A Link to the Past, is a must-have.
--A lot of people liked Golden Sun, but I found it pretty bland. Still may be worth a try.
-- Wario Ware Series

DS:
-- Phoenix Wright series
-- New Super Mario Bros.
-- Elite Beat Agents
-- Rune Factory if you like Harvest Moon.

Do what you can to play wirelessly.

i'm going to assume you like RPG's, so get Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga for your GBA port and after you beat that, get Mario and Luigi: Partners in time.

when it comes out, get FF4 on the DS. best FF ever.

For GBA, I'd recommend Tales of Phantasia. The Super Famicom and PSX versions are my favorite RPGs right after the Lunar series.

For the DS, unfortunately Lunar: DS isn't all that great. If you can find it for like $10 in a bargain bin then it might be worth it, but I couldn't recommend the game otherwise.

Besides that, all of Werefrog's suggestions are good. Especially the Phoenix Wright series. KF

If you liked the Sonic games for the Genesis, I've found the incarnations on the GBA and DS to be fun. I haven't beat any of them (don't have the time), but it's fun just playing the fast-paced levels.

Otherwise, what other people have said is what I would say. Especially Phoenix Wright.

Zelda: A Link to the Past and Final Fantasy VI on the GBA are must-haves considering you haven't played them on a SNES.

I'll fourth the suggestion of the Phoenix Wright games. They kick all manner of hindquarters. I'm also rather fond of the assorted GBA and DS Castlevanias, especially Aria of Sorrow and Portrait of Ruin (dern...%@#$^@*@...PSP...owners...got...Rondo!!!!).

I totally forgot that FF6 was available for the GBA. That's definitely my favorite Final Fantasy, and I would recommend that to nearly everyone.

Also, I'm sorry that I didn't answer your question about wireless before. I don't have access to wireless right now due to my university's policy, and I'm doing okay. However, if you are going to want to play online, I would suggest getting a cheap wireless router (Check Nintendo's site for compatibility first). Most likely, you'll have some other device (such as a Nintendo Wii, one of the new iPods, or a laptop) in the future that can take advantage of having a router especially if you're a techie.

I'm going to go against what people here are saying and tell you to hold off on FF6. FF3 got remade on the DS (beautiful yet boring) and now FF4 (MY favorite) is coming to the DS rather shortly. I have a sneaking suspicion that 5 and 6 (maybe not 5...but so what?) will make it to the DS after that. this is probably to fund the ff7 ps3 remake. i'll second those castlevania's though! get those.

online play? Planet Puzzle League. $30 for online tetris attack. get deal.

Congratulations on your new toy! :D You may want to check out the ff, besides those that have already been mentioned:

Advance Wars Dual Strike
Metroid Prime Hunters
Hotel Dusk Room 215
Lunar Knights (nothing to do with 'our' Lunar)
Contra 4

Uwe Boll brainstorming for Lunar: Silver Star Movie

Rick Astley as Alex, casting White Dragon Protect.

Yes, I agree. The DS has a very active homebrew scene that you can get involved in with flashable carts.

Advance Wars are awesome.

Though, the games to get are....

Pokemon Sapphire
Pokemon Ruby
Pokemon Emerald
Pokemon Diamond
Pokemon Pearl
Pokemon This and That and The Other....

Hehe, kidding. Pokemon is fun, but... I am getting tired of having to have all 50 of their games to get half the pokemon total, and then having to travel across the world to expensive events to unlock the rest.

I've had a DS for quite a while and some of the good DS games I can put on the top of my head are pokemon pearl, ninja gaiden dragon sword and final fantasyXII revanent wings. As for GBA, Fire Emblem Sacred Stones, Lunar Legend and Tactics Ogre The Knights of Lodis.

In the strategy genre, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is great, and so is Yggdra Union. The latter is an acquired taste though, some might find it a bit too weird. Speaking of acquired tastes, Riviera: The Promised Land is great (if you can find it) and so is Etrian Odyssey.
In the Zelda vein, The Minish Cap is a pretty good game.
This is my signature. It is a work of art.

I'll second the Yggdra Union and Riviera recommendations, though they may be hard to find by now.

I keep meaning to get back to Golden Sun. What I've heard with it is that you really want to play both it and its sequel, as the first game is only half the story. What I played of the first one was fun enough, although you really don't want to play it on a GB Player as some of it is intolerably pixellated on the big screen. I haven't tried playing it on a DS yet.

I didn't like Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time nearly as much as Superstar Saga, which I thought was excellent. Partners in Time is far more linear (in the sense that there isn't much exploration to do) and has some annoying controls; it does, though, have some very funny moments and is still enjoyable.

I've also had Super Princess Peach and Trace Memory waiting for me to get to them for quite a while, but since I haven't played them yet I can't give a personal recommendation. I got them because they were highly recommended by someone whose game taste I trust, though.

Golden Sun was very fun. I never beat it though, and while I own the second part as well, I have never played it. *sigh* I really should though, but I am stuck currently and no longer remember exactly where I am. The puzzles though, my gawd. If I wanted a pain of a puzzle when playing an RPG, I would play Lunar while putting together an expert two sided 3D New York City puzzle! (My grandma has it, she gave up on it, lol.)

I really liked the puzzles in Golden Sun. It was the battle system and story that I wasn't too crazy about. The story was just too forgettable. I took a few month break from playing it, and I completely forgot everything that happened.

Really, it's not a bad game. Its quality is probably comparable to the first Lufia on SNES which I enjoyed a lot. Golden Sun probably falls under the category of games that were overhyped and led to disappointment. Its quality just isn't worthy of the rampant fandom that it has. I guess that's my main problem with Golden Sun. That and I heard a lot of Golden Sun fans describe Lunar Legends as a Golden Sun clone. That sorta sealed that game's fate for me.
